Overview

That unforgettable "whirring" noise, the screeching sound of the drill hitting the tooth, the agony of waiting for it to be all over. That's many patients' indelible memory of the dentist, but it doesn't have to be anymore. The skilled dentists at Washington Center for Dentistry, use drill-free fillings to remove decay in its earliest stages. Compared to traditional drilling, this treatment preserves more of the patient’s natural tooth in a gentler manner. With new technology, a micro-air wand replaces the dreaded drill, using compressed air and fine particles to gently spray away decay. It allows the dentists to treat teeth without the needle, the drill or the noise that make so many people fear going to the dentist. Since a white liquid hardens to fill the area, the dentists are able to preserve the tooth’s original appearance for a more natural look.

Any technology that does away with the despised dental drill is already plus. But as a bonus with drill-free fillings, there are:

  • No needles.
  • No numbness.
  • No drills.
  • No pain.
  • No smell.
  • No noise.
  • No vibrations.

This reduces the anxiety, fear, pain and discomfort associated with traditional fillings, which provides an all-around more pleasant experience. After awhile, you may even enjoy going to the dentist. You probably never thought that was possible, did you?

Really great service! They care about your entire health, blood pressure, jaw, etc, not just gum and teeth. Excellent service.

They have the whole floor. The staff is super nice and they treat you well. The downside is that you have to pay upfront and then get your money from your insurance, which they submit for you.

How it Works

How does this wonderful, cutting-edge procedure work? Well, drill-free drillings can be described as "air abrasion," where an instrument sprays out a fine, gritty stream. These fine particles brush away the tooth decay gently yet effectively at a low pressure. This low pressure is tolerated well by most patients with no pain or discomfort involved. It’s important to note that drill-free fillings are intended for early-stage decay and not intended for more aggressive forms. So, the earlier you and your dentist notice any decay, the more likely you can avoid the drills and needles. Another benefit of keeping up with your oral health!

About Us
Does getting a drill-free filling hurt?
No, it doesn't. Because the drill-free filling procedure is gentler than using a traditional drill, it typically isn't even necessary to use an anesthetic injection. Most patients don't feel any pain and little to no discomfort. Some patients may experience mild tooth sensitivity after their procedure, but this is easy to control with over-the-counter pain relievers and typically goes away quickly.
How long does it take to get a drill-free filling done?
Having a drill-free filling done at Washington Center for Dentistry can be completed in about 30 – 60 minutes, depending on the tooth treated and the level of decay.
Are drill-free fillings safe?
Yes, they are. The surrounding teeth are protected with a specialized resin before we begin, and the abrasive particles are suctioned up as the procedure progresses.
Can drill-free fillings be done for all cavities?
No, they can't. Drill-free fillings are typically best for early-stage cavities and tooth decay, so the earlier you have treatment, the better suited you are for this procedure. People with larger cavities or significant tooth decay may not be candidates for drill-free fillings.
