Believing that the United States should have its very own art museum comparable to other great nations, art collector and financier, Andrew W. Mellon, conceived the idea of the National Gallery of Art. The gallery was established in 1937 and officially opened to the American public in 1941 with world-class art. Throughout its history, the National Gallery of Art has continued to evolve and delight generation after generation with its beautiful, inspirational pieces of art.
