Contact UsWhat Is a Snoring Appliance?
Snoring isn’t sexy, but it’s pretty common—among men, and women! The reality is that nearly one in three adults snore on a regular basis, where men snore more than women. Snoring increases with age and increasing weight. Drinking alcohol before bed, being overweight, smoking or overeating—all make snoring worse.
For patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), a condition that blocks the airway and momentarily interferes with normal breathing, peaceful sleep can be disrupted. The skilled dentists at Washington Center for Dentistry can prescribe a convenient, comfortable oral snoring appliance that helps reduce snoring and restore restful sleep. The dental device, which resembles a sports mouth guard, is known for better compliance than CPAP systems, which pump air through a nasal mask. Since a CPAP isn’t easily tolerable by some patients, a snoring appliance is a much better option for them.
How Do Snoring Appliances Work?
Most of our patients (and their spouses!) are happily relieved to learn that a convenient, comfortable oral appliance offers a state-of-the-art solution that is less invasive and more comfortable than conventional treatments. It is:
- Comfortable, custom fit, easy to wear.
- Worn during sleep.
- Hidden inside the mouth, allowing lips to close.
- Seamless where the mouth can open and close normally.
- Small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.
- Easy to carry when traveling.

What's the Difference: Snoring Appliance vs. CPAP Machine
In the past, the gold standard for treatment was the CPAP (Continuous Positive Airflow Pressure) machine that pumps air through a facial mask to keep the airway open. While highly effective, the CPAP gets low marks from many users who find it difficult to tolerate while they sleep. In fact, studies show that discomfort and impractical while traveling are two popular reasons why CPAP compliance is often below 50%. Also, the awkward tubing and the need to locate electrical outlets while traveling lower usage.
It is estimated that 1 out of 2 to 1 out of 4 people do not wear their CPAP machines, risking heart failure, high blood pressure and stroke. In addition, the loud snoring often places a strain on patients' relationships.
Special training in this area has allowed Dr. Katsaros to help hundreds of patients eliminate the problems and risks of snoring and sleep apnea. The game-changer is an amazing airway-opening dental appliance that resembles a comfortable sports mouth guard. And the exciting result is that it has ushered in better compliance than CPAP systems. Patients with moderate sleep apnea and snoring love the benefits. It’s comfortable and practical. It is hidden inside the mouth and allows the lips to close and the mouth to open normally. It works by opening the airway, as it gently brings the lower jaw and tongue forward during sleep. We recommend you combine healthy lifestyle choices with a customized oral device to be worn while you sleep.
Am I at Risk for Sleep Apnea?
Anyone can suffer from snoring and sleep apnea, but some people are more likely to have their sleep disrupted by it. Obstructive sleep apnea, the most common kind, is a condition where the soft tissues in your throat close up and block your airway while you sleep. Several factors can put you at a greater risk for obstructive sleep apnea, including:
- Smoking. If you are a smoker, you are three times more likely to suffer from sleep apnea. Smoking can inflame your upper airway and make it easier to close up during sleep.
- Excess weight. When you are overweight, you may have fat deposits around your upper airway that can obstruct your breathing while you sleep.
- Age. Adults over the age of 60 are significantly more likely to develop sleep apnea.
- Gender. Males develop sleep apnea twice as often as females.
- Alcohol. Drinking alcohol before bed or using sedatives or tranquilizers can relax the muscles in your throat to the point that they obstruct your airway.
