What Is Oral Sedation?

If a patient has been putting off dental work due to fear, oral sedation dentistry can change all of that. A patient no longer has to be afraid to visit the dentist with the use of a variety of oral medications. On the day of the appointment, the patient will arrive about one hour early for one of Washington Center for Dentistry’s experienced dentists to administer the sedation medication. The pleasant-tasting medication is given by mouth to relax and allow the patient to be comfortable. He or she will be able to enjoy the peace of mind of knowing that all dental needs can easily be taken care of without discomfort. The patient will need a friend or relative to accompany him or her home after treatment.

Am I a Candidate for Oral Sedation?

While oral sedation is used for patients who are truly anxious or scared about getting dental work, it can also benefit patients who:

  • Can’t sit still for prolonged periods of time in the dental chair.
  • Have a low tolerance for pain.
  • Have extremely sensitive teeth.
  • Require a large amount of extensive dental work.
  • Have a sensitive gag reflex.

Best dental office in DC, period. Only drawback is you have to pay in full and THEN get reimbursed by insurance. Otherwise, a perfect place and great hours. Especially good for those who have fears or anxiety about dental work. Staff is supportive, kind, gentle, encouraging, and go out of their way to make any process both painless and comfortable.

About Us
Is Oral Sedation Safe?
While there is some risk associated with any kind of sedation or anesthesia, our patients can rest assured that our dental team is highly qualified and experienced in administering oral sedation. Most patients can handle sedation well, but patients who are obese, suffer from sleep apnea, or who have other medical problems should consult with their doctor beforehand. They will determine whether or not sedation is safe for you. Patients should also discuss their medical history, including medication usage, with the dentist prior to treatment.
Will I Be Able to Drive Home After Oral Sedation?
No, you won't. Because the effects of oral sedation medications can last for several hours after the procedure, you will need someone to drive you home.
Does Oral Sedation Put You to Sleep?
No, it doesn't. Although some patients can fall asleep with oral sedation, it is only from a feeling of relaxation and not the medication itself. If you fall asleep, we can still work, or we will gently wake you.
How Quickly Does Oral Sedation Work?
Most patients will begin to notice the effects of oral sedation in about 45 minutes to an hour.
